The importance of computers for development and modern technology, and the need for specialists in this field, increased as computers became increasingly integrated into all aspects of life.
Based on this understanding and recognizing the anticipated need for qualified national professionals in the field of computer science, the King Saud University Council approved, at the beginning of the academic year 1402/1403 AH, the establishment of two academic programs: a Computer Science program within the College of Science and a Computer Engineering program within the College of Engineering.
1404-1420 AH
The two programs began operations and quickly attracted a large number of students, prompting consideration of expanding their scope.
Accordingly, a committee was formed, comprised of faculty members specializing in this field from King Saud University.
This committee conducted extensive studies to explore the best ways and means to enhance the computer science and engineering curricula and programs at the university. It ultimately recommended establishing a college, to be named the College of Computer and Information Sciences, and submitted its recommendation to the relevant authorities for approval. The committee also conducted the necessary studies and research to develop the curricula and courses for the various departments within this proposed college.
Subsequently, a royal decree, number 7/1558, dated 19/05/1404 AH, was issued establishing the College of Computer and Information Sciences and affiliating it with King Saud University. The decree stipulated that the college would have the same financial, administrative, and academic arrangements as other colleges and institutes within the university, and approved its commencement of academic activities at the beginning of the academic year 1404/1405 AH.
Student admissions to the various programs began in the academic year 1404-1405 AH.
